Applying to HIS

*Please note that per international school rules within China, HIS may only accept applicants that hold an overseas passport with a valid Chinese Visa, birth certificate, or in special cases, have obtained a waiver letter from the Hangzhou Education Commission.

Admission Checklist

Before the admission committee will review any application, the following documents should be sent to the Admission Office:

  • Completed downloadable version of filled application.
  • The following documents:
    • For Grades 1 - 12 : School Report / Transcripts from the two previous years of school and recommendation letter from the Classroom teacher.
    • For Grades 6-12: Recommendation Letter from the Math, English and Advisor/Homeroom teacher.
    • Applicants for High School (grades 10-12) should provide a transcript for all completed previous high school coursework.
    • Copies of applicant Passport and Chinese valid visa.
    • Copies of applicant Birth Certificate.
    • Copies of parent passports and if applicable, residential visas.
    • Copy of applicant immunization record.
  • A campus visit is required for all applicants currently living in Hangzhou
  • Application fee: RMB 2,000 ) This application fee is non-refundable, no exceptions. Before you make the payment, it's your responsibility to make sure you are able to submit all the documentation required.

Application Process

Step 1: Fill out and submit a downloadable version

Step 2: Submit all necessary documents and application form by emailing them to the Admission Office at HISadmissions@his-china.org

Required documents for the applications:

  • For Grades 1 - 12 : School Report / Transcripts from the two previous years of school and recommendation letter from the Classroom teacher.
  • For Grades 6-12: Recommendation Letter from the Math, English and Advisor/Homeroom teacher.
  • Applicants for High School (grades 10-12) should provide a transcript for all completed previous high school coursework.
  • Copies of applicant Passport and Chinese valid visa.
  • Copies of applicant Birth Certificate.
  • Copies of parent passports and if applicable, residential visas.
  • Copy of applicant immunization record.

Additional documentation, if available:

  • Any standardized test results (NWEA MAP, ISA, IOWA, WIDA, SAT, PSAT, etc)

Step 3: Pay the application fee RMB 2,000. This application fee is non-refundable, no exceptions. Before you make the payment, it's your responsibility to make sure you are able to submit all the documentation required. The Admissions Committee reviews a completed application and a decision is sent to the family after approximately one work week.


Admissions Age

For admission to a given grade a child must have celebrated their birthday by October 31st. The guidelines are as follows (all having turned the indicated age prior to or on October 31st:

Early Childhood Years

Nursery: 2 years old; Pre-School: 3 years old; Pre-Kinder: 4 years old; Kindergarten: 5 years old

Elementary Grades

First Grade: 6 years old; Second Grade: 7 years old; Third Grade: 8 years old; Fourth Grade: 9 years old; Fifth Grade: 10 years old

Middle School Grades

Sixth Grade: 11 years old; Seventh Grade: 12 years old; Eighth Grade: 13 years old

High School

Ninth Grade: 14 years old; Tenth Grade: 15 years old; Eleventh Grade: 16 years old; Twelfth Grade: 17 years old
