Congratulations to New HIS National Honor Society Members!
This past week five students from high school were officially inducted into the National Honor Society. The students were:
Megan Mullen, Jun-Hao Kang, Vanessa Rimmer, Ana Daruka, Alex Cheung
Selection is based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The National Honor Society requires some sort of service to the community, school, or other organizations. The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. National Honor Society groups are commonly active in community service activities both in the community and at the school. Many chapters maintain a requirement for participation in such service activities.
During his introductory address, Head of School, Mr. Robert van der Eyken spoke about not only the honor this represents to the students and their families but the added degrees of responsibility they now have vowed to live up to as members of the National Honor Society. He mentioned that in a school like HIS, where high school students regularly interact with lower school students, our older students are constant models to younger children. This mirrors society as a whole where we are constantly observing and learning from older, more experienced members of the community.
